We dont have a server in house and there maybe some additional permissions on the server that is stopping the icon displaying correctly. We have tried using Process Explorer which was located on the XP Mode network drive and got the same issue where the shortcut in Windows 7 was showing as the XP Mode shortcut.
I will try to rebuild the Icon Cache although I think I may have done this already but will do it again to make sure! I think it may be to do with the permissions that have been setup for the user and is blocking XP Mode from populating an icon therefore the only icon it can produce is the XP Mode icon. Have you resolved this issue? If there is anything I can do for you, please just let me know. I will try my best to be of assistance. I suspect this is related to the icon cache, so we could try this method first. If this cannot work, it could be also relate to some software, perform a Clean Boot to check how it works. As this thread has been quiet for a while, we assume that the issue has been resolved.

I am looking forward to hearing from you again. Could it potentially be a permissions issue? It may be a bit difficult to re-create the users profile as we only support our software and dont normally get involved with things like that.
I can get one of their IT guys to do it but I am not sure whether it will help. If you really think it may make a difference then I will try it but based on more than one user suffering the problem I think it may be more deeper than just re-creating a users profile.

We have seen the same issue when Process Explorer was also moved to a network drive the icon was being changed in Windows 7 to be the standard XP Mode icon instead of it's own icon.
